Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering is a highly complicated and upgraded branch of Biotechnology, which involves deliberate manipulation of the genetic material (DNA) of an organism by artificial methods. It is applied in plants to change the colour, size, texture etc. so as to improve its quality & quantity and these items are referred to as GM (Genetically Modified) foods. In humans, GE is employed to correct severe hereditary defects by introducing normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones.It can stimulate the growth and yield of a variety of food crops like pulses, cereals etc. and alleviate the problems of food shortage and mitigate the sufferings of starving millions across the globe. The scope of genetic engineering is limitless and its horizon is widening with every day of research. Genetic engineering like many other branches of science, for example, nuclear science, can be used nobly as well as ignobly.

Courses & Eligibility:

The eligibility criterion for admissions in a Bachelor’s programme is 10+2 in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects. The 2 year M.tech course can be pursued after successfully completing an Undergraduate course. Students are subjected to go through entrance exams like GATE for admissions in B.Tech & M.Tech courses. One can also opt for a doctorate degree(PhD) under the guidance a professor/lecturer.

Remuneration:

The fresher can initially draw around Rs. 8000-10000. But with experience the salary might shoot up to Rs. 20000. Remuneration in this field, solely depends on the personal success of an individual.
