Ocean engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the development of equipment and techniques for the exploration of the ocean floor and exploitation of its resources. This field involves intense research of the ocean and its impact on the environment and technology. It is actually a combination of several types of engineering: a mix of mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical engineering techniques and skills, coupled with a basic understanding of how the oceans work. Ocean engineers are by necessity innovative, creative as well as effective team workers with good computer software knowledge. Despite being a new field of study it has already started to make waves amid students as there is so much yet to be discovered about our oceans. Therefore, graduateshave a wide range of employment opportunities world-wide
Courses & Eligibility:
The various courses offered in this field of engineering are:
- B.Tech. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
- Diploma Programme in Shipbuilding Engineering.
- M.Tech. Marine Structures.
- M.Tech. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
- M.Tech. Ocean Technology.
- M.Tech. Offshore Structures.
The eligibility criteria for admissions in a Bachelor's programme is 10+2 in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects. The 2 year M.tech course can be pursued after successfully completing an Undergraduate course. Students are subjected to go through entrance exams like GATE for admissions in B.Tech & M.Tech courses. Candidates can also take up a diploma course after completing class X.
Ocean engineers have vast employment opportunities as their employment is expected to increase by 10% in the coming years. There's a lot of scope for ocean engineers in consultancy, marketing and sales, operations, regulation, surveying and overseeing, research and development, education and training, etc. Ocean Engineers are employed by Classification Societies as ship surveyors who work on evaluating the safety of ships and marine structures world wide. They are also employed to give professional advice and technical support to customers of the offshore industry. Great careers are open to Ocean Engineers in India and abroad in Offshore Oil Recovery, Marine metals and corrosion, Environmental Protection, Global Climate Monitoring, Renewable Energy, Underwater Vehicles, Remote Sensing, Marine Transportation and Naval Architecture & Defense.
Salaries are solely based on the qualifications of a candidate. Starting salary of ocean engineering graduates employed in government sectors such as ONGC, Bombay High etc. may be about Rs 20,000 to 25,000 pm. MNCs and reputed companies like Reliance Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum and EXXON offer starting salary of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.
