The Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IIT-B) has joined a group of foreign universities to set up a research centre in New York which would help solve urban complex problems. The institute also aims to set up a similar centre focusing on the major Indian cities in Mumbai.

IIT-B partnered with New York University, Warwick University, Canegie Melon and Toronto University with New York University as the leading institute to bid for setting up an Applied Sciences Research Institute in New York City. The bid document hoped to set up a Centre for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP).

In April 2012 the bid was declared the second winner and the group of universities was requested to set up CUSP in Brooklyn, New York.

CUSP aims to give solutions for various urban complex problems with New York as its initial focus city. Eventually the centre will also solve problems focused in other cities such as London, Mumbai and Toronto amongst others.

The centre will take up problems in consultation with various agencies of the city, namely, transport, communication, water, housing, etc.
