There are several top educational institutes in India that are known for their quality in terms of the faculty members, infrastructure, extracurricular activities and overall approach in the way students are groomed. Recently the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has been rated as the world’s one of the best institute and has climbed up the ladder of success as per the 2009 Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings. Followed by IIT Bombay, which has acquired the position of 163 in 2009, but IIT Delhi has failed to live upto the expectation and has slipped to the position of 181 in 2009 in comparison to a position of 154 in 2008.

The strength of some universities is sometimes drawn on the basis of the subject ranking but they are not even counted in top 200. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has bagged a rank on the basis of subject ranking for the arts and humanities. Although India is represented only by the IITs in metros, neighboring country China has six universities in the overall ranking and five universities are from Hong Kong. The European Union, however, has declared that India and China are likely to become the leading research powers by 2025.
