The Admission Committee of IITJEE has decided to grant 4.5% reservation to minorities within the 27% seats reserved for the OBCs (Other Backward Classes) from this academic year.

Those candidates belonging to minority community who have submitted their online application forms without mentioning their category can mention the same by logging onto IIT JEE official website by giving a declaration that they belong to minority channel and depositing their certificate before the date of exam, April 8, 2012. The candidates are required to give their undertakings to their respective zonal offices before Tuesday, March 20, 2012.

Sources from IITJEE admission committee revealed that the application forms are not carrying minority status information since this is a recent announcement. The students have been asked to submit their undertaking first and later on submit their certificates to claim their reservation. If the candidates fail to submit certificates, they will not be considered for reservation in the category as an individual list will be prepared.

After implementation of reservation, about 430 candidates from minority community are expected to get entry in 17 IITs across India, against the total number of 9500 seats as in 2011.

The final number of total seats available in all IITs will be made available after March 25, 2012. Some IITs may increase their intake capacity while some may introduce new courses. IIT JEE has declared formally that it will be introducing 2 new programs this academic year namely; Engineering Science and Civil Engineering offering 25 seats in each.

Till now IITs have received 507607 applications which slightly higher than the previous year. However there may be changes in the final figures as some students have applied to 2 zones while some have failed to present the required documents.

Kanpur zone of Uttar Pradesh received maximum number of applications this year. Madras received nearly 78000 applications.
