With the IITs adopting a common entrance exam for admissions, the NITs (National Institutes of Technology) are also reworking their admission process.

Admission to bachelor degree programs at NITs will be based on candidate’s performance in Class XII board exams which will be assigned 40% weightage and score of the JEE Main test which will cover 60% of the final marks. This will be implemented from 2013.

This was decided in a meeting of NIT Council headed by Union Minister, human resource development, Kapil Sibal on July 4, 2012. The country has 30 NITs which provide admission to 20, 000 students every year.

The 40% weighatge to class XII board Results will be given after normalizing the state board marks. Candidates aspiring for NITs will not have to take the JEE-Advanced test which is now only for the IITs.

NITs accept common entrance test for admission to bachelor degree engineering courses

NITs (National Institutes of Technology) adopted the common entrance test for admission to undergraduate program with some modifications on July 4, 2012. This will come into effect from 2013 and 40% weightage will given to class XII board marks and 60% to JEE-Main test while preparing the merit list.

The committee would work on validating the formulae already proposed for normalizing the state board Results.

The meeting followed as IITs agreed last week to accept the compromise formula for admission to undergraduate programs allowing only top 20 percentile of successful students of respective boards to appear for the JEE-Advanced test.
