Harvard Business School Commences Executive Program in India, Ratan Tata Chips In

The Harvard Business School (HBS) headquartered in the US will commence its executive education program in India at Bandra-based Taj Lands, in the suburbs of Mumbai from March this year. The space allotted at the hotel is influenced by the Harvard Business School, Boston’s amphitheatre-style classroom. Ratan Tata has chipped in by offering to construct these amphitheatre- Harvard-style classrooms with batch size of 82. He also claimed that there is no better way than education to invest in collective future of the country.

Harvard Business School is conducting Management Development program (MDPs) or executive education programs at 5-star hotels since 2008.  

Founded in 2006, the India Research Center (IRC) of HBS currently offers 3 executive education programs. While this year it has already offered 1 executive education course, the B-school will also offer 2 courses in the month of March and May, 2012. Currently in March, HBS program is offering a program - ‘Building a Global Enterprise in India’, whose fee is Rs. 2, 29,250. In May, it’ll be offering a program on “Develop India – Real Estate Strategies for Growth”, for which it’ll charge Rs. 2, 04,750.

The expanding Indian executive education space worth Rs. 350 crore is attracting business schools to India. University of Pennysylvania and Wharton School of Business are also planning to open its centers in India. Sources from Wharton School of Business revealed that currently the school is looking out for setting up classrooms and office space in a centralized location in India and Mumbai is just perfect for the same. It will have physical presence in the country in the next 2 years. Through its center in India, the school will not only offer executive education programs but will also aim at making it a converging point for its alumni and call all its faculty members for conducting research activities.

Wharton joins the likes of Oxford University’s Said Business School, University of Chicago, INSEAD, Duke University and Tuck School of Business engaged in providing executive education programs in India. And comprehend that many of the rising markets continue to rise, and it is very important to have a range of centers around the globe. Presently, Wharton gets around 10000 executive education candidates on its campus each year from China, Brazil and India. India is among the top 3 countries in terms of applicants from outside the US.

Wharton has initiated a certificate program, ‘Accelerated Development Program’, for business executives in India from this year Jan 2012. Track 1 of the program will have 3 Wharton executive education programs in India with fees of about Rs. 6, 60,000 (including service tax). Track 2 will see 2 executive education programs in India and 1 in Philadelphia in the US. The fees charged will be Rs. 500000 (including service tax).
