Jewellery Designing

Fashion has always got something extra to offer and designing being the inevitable part of it also makes a suitable career avenue. The gem and jewellery industry is one of the most creative segments across the globe. The trade offers tremendous growth and exceptional career opportunities for many and given an opportunity of proper training and experience, only sky is the limit.

It is no longer a cloistered trade carried out by semi-literate goldsmiths in family vaults, passed down like a well-kept secret from generation to generation. Instead, thanks to the advances in technology, it has landed on the drawing board with some firms even using computer-aided designs to create exquisite pieces in virtual reality.

Eligibility: -

The course in this segment develops individual creativity, understanding and skills employed in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing. The practice of Jewellery Design has evolved giving way to advanced techniques and applications. The Diploma Course in Jewellery Design and Manufacture Technology is open to anyone holding a higher secondary certificate and proficient in English. The course is primarily for those who would like a career in both managerial activities as well as in production aspects of the jewelers business.

Most designers begin their careers as apprentices in jewellery showrooms or in their family businesses; the duration of apprenticeship may depend on their line of specialization and the nature of appointment. At the entry level, the apprentices are only designing products for the mass market but later they graduate to customized jewellery. Once they have evolved their inimitable style, some can start their own retail business.



Course: -

The UGC recognized degree will have a 12 semesters, three month per semester program. The total duration is like any other graduation course, which is of three years. There will be industry interface, workshop visit and internship programmes in the third and the final year. All the modules carry 100 marks on theory and 100 marks on practical. Some private institutes operate with their own norms and also there are diploma courses under this segment.

Syllabus: -

The course has different modules covering many technical streams including: Jewellery manufacturing, Diamonds, Gemology, Fashion jewellery and accessories, Jewellery design, Gem studding, Jewellery arts which includes Kundan Jarao Jewellery, Gold polishing and plating, Jewellery finishes. Thereafter there is business training in advertising, international trade, marketing, brand management etc. A part of the curriculum also has ancillary arts like Jewellery Store Design and Jewellery photography.

Job Prospects: -

The Indian gem industry aims to grow to $16 billion by 2010.This course provides opportunities in various sectors as designer who can work as freelancer in export and local market, can run consultancy in various jewellery fields and even work as a trainer in various designing institutions.

Course Fee: -

The eligibility for the course is plus two and the fee ranges from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh, depending on the nature of the programme.

Remuneration: -

The opportunities arising from this education promises to be manifold. Live projects, practical training shall enable graduates to seek entry level jobs for managerial positions in jewelry enterprise. The initial salary is around Rs 8000 per month. But with a recognized course the initial earning could be around 2 .5-3 lakhs per annum.
