GMAT loses its appeal among Indians but China reports a sharp increase

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is losing its popularity among Indians as only 25394 students took the test in 2011 while China is reported to register an increase with 40069 students appearing for the exam in the same year.

GMAT is an entry pass to the US colleges but is witnessing a sharp decline in its popularity in India with only 30633 test takers in 2009. While the number of test takers in India is dropping, management students in China taking GMAT has increased by 200%, from 13048 in 2007.

India was leading in 2007 with 21481 applicants. There was a marginal increase in the number of applicants in next 2 years and then it started dropping down. The Asian Geographical Trend Report for GMAT examinees reveals that despite of more number of applicants in the age group of 25 to 30 opting for the exam, the number of applicants in India is sliding down.

The percentage of applicants from China of the age below 25 years has increased from 48% in 2007 to 77% in 2011 while, Indian students opting for the exam has dropped down from 36% in 2007 to 34% in 2011.
