Six new IIMs to conduct Common Admission Process for 10,000 candidates

Six newly established Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are expected to invite applications from 10,000 candidates to take part in the combined Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) process termed “Common Admission Process” (CAP), as per officials of IIM-Tiruchirappalli. Altogether, there are 800 seats available in the new IIMs.

The PI-WAT process will begin during the middle of February and continue till the middle of March, 2014. Since all the candidates will wait till the end of March, 2014 for the CAP Results to be declared, the admission process of premier business schools (B-schools) offering Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programs might be adversely affected.

IIM-Tiruchirappalli is expected to conduct CAP 2014 for the six newer IIMs of Kashipur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur, Rohtak, Raipur and Ranchi.

The very first CAP for the new IIMs was held by IIM-Rohtak for the academic session of 2011-13. Group Discussion (GD) and PI were the main elements of the process. The CAP for Common Admission Test 2013 (CAT 2013) will be the fourth such process and include PI and WAT. The scores will be utilized by all the new IIMs.

IIM-Ranchi held the CAP after CAT 2011, during which GD was replaced with WAT. The third CAP for CAT 2012 was held by IIM-Raipur. PI and WAT were retained during this round.

CAP is expected to benefit students by saving time as the system does not require students to attend PI-WAT processes at multiple institutes. The entire procedure will be smoother which will benefit the IIMs as well.

All the six new IIMs excepting IIM-Kashipur and IIM-Rohtak have identical criteria for short listing candidates. IIM-Kashipur and IIM-Rohtak will send individual lists to IIM-Tiruchirappalli and a common list will be prepared. All the IIMs are expected to draw up their individual short list of students on the basis of their individual criteria. IIM-Tiruchirappalli will prepare the combined list of students which will be processed further.

As per officials of IIM-Tiruchirappalli, PI and WAT will be the only common parameters of assessment in the CAP by the new IIMs. Individual IIMs may have their own eligibility criteria such as professional experience of the candidates, scores in graduation, CAT scores, etc.

After the PI-WAT scores are normalized across all IIMs, centers and panels, a combined merit list is expected to be drawn covering all the candidates who are shortlisted for admission to the new IIMs. Each IIM will combine the normalized PI-WAT scores with other scores such as profile score, CAT score, etc. to prepare their own merit list to select candidates for admission.
