Ganguly was born in Calcutta and has played for Bengal, India, and English county side Lancashire. He is an aggressive left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler.

Ganguly made his first international appearance in the Indian one-day side that faced the West Indies at Brisbane, Australia, in 1992. He made an impressive Test match debut in 1996 against England at Lord’s, scoring a century and taking three wickets.
