National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar is one of premier
engineering institutes of India. The institute was formerly known as
Regional Engineering College, Silchar and was established in 1967 as a
joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam. The
college started its classes in 1977 and presently offers undergraduate
and postgraduate programs in various branches of engineering. In 2002,
the institute was accorded the status of Deemed University and was
renamed as National Institute of Technology, Silchar.
Infrastructure NIT Silchar is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 450 acres (1.8 km2) of land on the outskirts of Silchar amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks.NITS is a fully residential institution with six hostels for boys and one for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000 and that of the girls hostel is 150.High speed internet connection is available in all the hostels from 6 pm to 7.30 am on week days and 24 hours on week ends.A 300 bed state-of-the-art new Men's hostel has been completed and is to be fully functional from this year onwards. Facilities: The T&P cell have access to the best resources of NIT Silchar in order to ensure that all concerned activities are executed properly. The institute provides placement and training facilities to all the inmates along with hostel accommodations. The University administrative department takes good care of all the financial and material support required for student placement and campus interviews.
