Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, Thanjavur or SASTRA came into being in 1984. The college was earlier known as Shanmugha College of Engineering. SASTRA is a premier institution in terms of academic performance, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The institute is spread over 1.5 million square feet which houses more than 8000 students and 600 teaching faculty. The college has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

SASTRA not only offers courses on Engineering and Science, but there are courses for Education, Management, and Arts besides the various Doctoral programmes. It contains state-of-the-art laboratories and a very large and well maintained library. The computer centre of SASTRA is also one of the best.

Campus Facilities

The campus occupies a built up area of over 1.2 million square feet and houses a population of over 9,000 students.The institute has 7 boys' hostels and 4 girls' hostels providing accommodation to over 5000 boys and 3000 girls. A new hostel has been constructed for accommodating more on the campus. Also,the wi-fi range is being increased to the whole campus. The wi-fi facility has been extended to cover 7-Cube wadio (wireless radio).
