The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), which is declared as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, was set up under Department of Space, Government of India, and offers undergraduates B Tech programmer in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and five year integrated masters in Applied Sciences. IIST also offers post graduate and doctoral programmers to meet the requirements of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). In addition to the regular curriculum, the courses will have special modules tailored to space technology and space science. IIST focuses on high-end research activities with the country's space programmers and related innovative ventures.
The Institute provides a full fledged infrastructure of International standards to develop an excellent academic and research atmosphere. The academic programmer for the year 2007-2008 started in a full fledged alternate campus adjacent to the world renowned Vikram Sarabhai Space Center at Thiruvananthapuram. Development of permanent campus near Thiruvananthapuram, has been initiated and is expected to be realized in the next one year. Facilities offered by IIST:

The curriculum for the above streams has been carefully structured keeping the generic requirement of Science and Engineering intact with more focus to space science and technology to meet the high technology requirements of ISRO. In addition, the curriculum taught in IITs and other premier institutions in India and abroad in the areas of Electronics & Communication, Mechanical and Aerospace engineering and Physical Sciences have been widely utilized in framing the syllabus.
The first year syllabus shall be common to all students. Second year and third year will have engineering stream curriculum and the fourth year curriculum will be developed as optional credits by careful selection of credits suiting the hitech requirements of ISRO. Optional credits during the final year will be a combination of specialized subjects, which are relevant to Space Technology. The curriculum has been thoroughly discussed and finalized by the academic council. 2. Masters Level Programmes (2 years):- The Institute will start the following master level programmes from January 2010.
