Q1. Could you briefly tell us about the TAPMI
T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) located in the international university town of Manipal (Karnataka), is among the leading management institutes in India, and is reputed for its academic rigour and faculty-student interaction. Founded in 1980 by the visionary, Late Shri. T. A. Pai, TAPMI’s mission is to provide much needed impetus to the task of building professional management capability in the country. It has also played a role in strengthening the existing educational and health infrastructure of Manipal.
Since commencement of the PG Programme in 1984, TAPMI received recognition and respect amongst the well-known industrial houses and academic institutions in India and abroad for the quality of its education. Continuous improvements in the curriculum, structure, academic systems and faculty resources have contributed significantly in making TAPMI a preferred centre for management education. Today, over 2500 TAPMI alumni hold responsible managerial positions in the corporate world.
In early 2009, its 25th year of running, TAPMI took a landmark step in its history by shifting to a new scenic 42-acre fully residential campus in Manipal. Located on a hillock and overlooking a valley filled with verdant tropical greenery, this campus provides an ideal setting for serious academic study and creativity, combined with entertainment and relaxation.
The new facility, which was developed at a cost of about Rs. 60 crores includes a built up area of 2,60,000 sq. ft. to house modern, state-of-the-art, Wi-Fi-enabled, air-conditioned classrooms for students, plush offices for faculty and staff, a knowledge centre, a computer centre, a student’s centre, hostels for men and women and residences for faculty and staff. The student’s centre is home to a food court, a gym, a yoga and meditation room, a mini open-air theatre and a convenience store.
TAPMI has a Centre for Executive Education (CEE) at Bangalore. EEPs and Corporate College programmes have been successfully conducted for Oracle, HP, Mphasis and others at this Centre.
TAPMI has been consistently ranked among top 1 % B-schools in India. CRISIL accorded it’s A*** grade to TAPMI at national and State level. The Programs of TAPMI offers great opportunities as well as flexibility for students to choose and work in the areas of their interest. The curriculum design ensures sequential learning and enables students to go through management education in a systematic way. One of the key strengths of TAPMI is the qualified and experienced faculty members, who over these years have endeavored to develop contemporary curriculum, and an effective teaching learning interface. The students generally, on completion of the two year programme are ready to face the challenges of the competitive business environment. Leadership Series Lecture organized provides opportunities for students to listen to the address of Business Leaders and interact with them. So far sixe such lectures have been organized since 2010. 75% of its faculty members have doctoral qualifications from best of the institutions in India and abroad, while others come with rich industrial experience, so that concept and knowledge areas of management are supplemented with hands-on experience. Faculty members are engaged in Research, consulting and Executive Education Programmes.
All TAPMI students undergo a two week Non-Government Organisation (NGO) stint for gaining a rich experience of Social Orientation. Another valuable learning exercise is through a week long and unique Outbound Program that brings out the potential for teamwork, leadership skills and builds self-confidence. TAPMI is the first institute to introduce ethics as a compulsory course.
One of the most important innovations of TAPMI is its ability to convert student summer internship experience (called MIP- Management in Practice) into a consolidating learning experience. This particular aspect of the curriculum has proved to be one of the most effective learning systems for both students and faculty as it culminates in case study. TAPMI has generated over 400 cases authored by students with the guidance from faculty through MIP and about 200 of these cases have been registered at European Case Clearing House (ECCH), a major international case clearing agency and Asian Business Case Centre.
TAPMI has received over these years, a number of awards such as Best B-School award. Recent one was AIMS We-School Innovation Award received from AIMS in August 2011. Our students have brought laurels in management event organized at other B-Schools by winning in first/second positions.
