Psychiatry is a branch of medical science which deals with the cause and treatment of mental diseases. The primary objective of psychiatry is to understand the human mind for diagnosing and treating emotional, behavioral and mental disorders found in a patient.  Psychiatry generally follows biomedical approach and narrative approach to evaluate mental diseases. During the treatment, a psychiatrist usually conducts physical examination, suggests laboratory and neuro-imaging tests, counsels the patient and prescribes medication.

Recently, neuro-imaging, genetics, and psychopharmacology have started being used to diagnose mental disorders accurately, categorize new mental disorders find new methods for treatment. There are many sub-specializations in this field namely, Neuropsychiatry, Forensic psychiatry, Geriatric psychiatry, Addiction psychiatry ,Biological psychiatry system ,Social psychiatry, Child and adolescent psychiatry.

Training and eligibility requirements:

Students aspiring to become psychiatrists are required to join a specialized courseafter completion of their undergraduate course in medicine (M.B.B.S). Students can either pursue Doctor of Medicine (M.D) in psychiatry which is a three years course or opt for diploma in psychiatry which is a two years course. There is also an alternative course offered by the National Board of Examinations equivalent to an MD degree.

Employment opportunities:

Psychiatrists are employed in mental hospitals including government hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private hospitals, clinics and health institutes. Psychiatrist graduates also have the option to start their own practice by registering with Medical Associations in India. Some students can also pursue academic research in this field. The average salary package offered initially to a psychiatrist is Rs.15, 000 –Rs.20, 000 per month. The two major mental health institutions in India are National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore and Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (VIMHANS), New Delhi. Students interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry should aim to join one of the aforementioned institutes.

The increasing amount of competition and pressure in daily life is increasing the demand for psychiatrists in India and opening several avenues for students interested in psychiatry field.
