Supreme Court (SC) has rejected government’s plea to postpone the first ever Common National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS and dental undergraduate seats in all medical colleges in the country.

The Centre had filed an application in the Supreme Court requesting for deferment of NEET 2012 by 1 year. In response to their application, the bench has asked the government either to withdraw their application and has taken the decision to reject the same otherwise. Moreover, the court has denied being a part of the government’s decision on this issue. The apex body also added that the proposal for introducing a single national level entrance test for all medical and dental colleges was approved by the court after hearing the Centre only.

Though in March, the Supreme Court had paved the way for the Centre and MCI to conduct NEET for MBBS and PG courses despite of the protests raised by some state governments such as Tamil Nadu. The health ministry had filed an application to postpone the NEET 2012 in response to the objections raised by many states. Moreover, the ministry stated that students required time to get familiar with the syllabus prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The affidavit filed by CBSE states that online submission of application forms for NEET-UG (undergraduate courses) were supposed to take place between December 1 to 16, 2011. The test was scheduled for May 13, 2012 and Results were expected to be declared in the last week of June.

Now when SC has stressed on conducting NEET in 2012 itself, Minister for Health, DL Ravindra Reddy left for New Delhi on Saturday to meet the Union Minister, Gulam Nabi Azad for clarifying the uncertainty on NEET 2012. The aim of his visit is to make certain whether the students of Andhra Pradesh will participate in NEET for the academic year 2012-13 or not.

Though, the SC is rigid on conducting NEET in 2012 despite of the objections raised by many states, government is still insisting on exempting the states where the students are not prepared for common entrance test.
