Chennai-based Anna University has announced the rank list for the undergraduate (UG) students. The list includes the names of the gold medalists as well. Around 1,200 students from 80 different colleges which were part of the erstwhile Anna University of Technology (AUT), Chennai, have acquired ranks in various subjects.
There are 50 ranks assigned in certain courses, whereas merely one or two ranks have been awarded in few other courses. According to officials of Anna University, the total number of ranks per course was decided based on the number of students in that particular branch as well as on a cut-off. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) was another determining factor of the rankings. The varsity adopted a lenient approach towards granting ranks this year as ranking affects placements, the officials added.
As per academic experts, although many rank-holders are from Chennai this year, the trend may change in the future. If the Results of the erstwhile AUTs are counted together, the total number of ranks of Chennai-based colleges may reduce.
The students of the different AUTs were clubbed together to count the gold medalists as well as first-rankers. As per RMK College of Engineering officials, the comparison might not be fair as the question papers differed in the different AUTs.
As per several educationists, rankings are a reflection of the quality of the institute and its students. However, that may not be valid, as the examination process is devoid of any regulation, state others.
Increased checks need to be implemented on the examination systems after which rankings/pass percentages may be regarded as parameters to judge the quality of the college, added academicians.
Many academic experts still vouch for the high number of ranks, which may prove to be beneficial for the students. As per Loyola ICAM College of Engineering and Technology officials, students with university ranking have greater opportunity to bag lucrative placements.
