KEA admissions 2012: 169 issues of seat blocking revealed, students join elsewhere

KEA has brought to the notice, 169 cases of seat blocking where students had secured seats through KEA (Karnataka Examinations Authority) and have taken admission elsewhere. Surprisingly, a minimum of 13 students have even taken admission orders from KEA after depositing the specific amount.

But they did not report to colleges for which they had paid the fees. They opted for colleges outside KEA.

This came to the notice after KEA wrote letters to the registrars of NIT-K (National Institute of Technology, Surathkal), Karnataka Veterinary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sciences Universities (KVAHSV), Bangalore and Bidar and University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and Bangalore, on August 5, 2012 asking for the names of students enrolled there this academic year. The KEA has warned of taking penal action against these students that might put their future at risk.

Sources from KEA expressed regret that despite of having joined somewhere else, students are holding back the seats. As per KEA officials, 35 students secured seats at University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, 47 at National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NIT-K) and 87 at veterinary colleges at Shimoga, Bangalore, Hassan and Bidar.

Out of 47 students who took admission in B Tech I at NIT, one had paid the fees to KEA on July 31, 2012 for a seat in EC branch at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore.
Moreover, 28 candidates who enrolled at NIT are revealed to have blocked their KEA seats without conceding them.

Renowned colleges

KEA revealed that these students had opted for choice 2 where students can retain their seats and can attend other round of counseling.

Most of these allotted seats were from leading colleges such as BMS College of Engineering, RV College of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology and BMS College of Engineering.

9 NIT students did not act on their KEA seat as they failed to retain, cancel or accept them. Of the 35 candidates who secured BSc (Agriculture or Forestry) seat at UAS, Dharwad, one had taken admission letter for KEA seat, 3 had cancelled their seats, 27 had retained them while one failed to take any action.

Of 87 students who took Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (BVSC & AH) course besides securing KEA seats, 11 had taken admission orders from KEA. 40 other students were found to have blocked their KEA seats while willing to participate in the next round of seat allotment. Only fourteen candidates cancelled their admissions while 2 others did not take any action.

Deadline to surrender seats

Students who had given choice 1 (accept KEA seats) can surrender their seats till 6 pm on August 17, 2012. In case they want to retain them, they will have to surrender the seats taken outside KEA.

They would be required to present the proof of surrender by submitting original surrender letters. Students who fail to do so will lose the amount paid to KEA.
