The NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action (POA-1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body. In the other way around, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India.
Assessment and Accreditation are broadly used for understanding the “Quality Status” of an institution. a College, a University, or any other recognized Unit therein, meets the standards of quality as set by the Accreditation Agency, in terms of its performance, related to the educational guidelines pertaining to education, making the curriculum complete, teaching-learning, evaluation, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organization, governance, financial well being and student services is in the context of Higher Education, the accreditation status indicates that the particular Higher Educational Institutions (HEI).
From 50 percent to “60-70 percent even 100 percent in a decade’s time, the number of NAAC-affiliated autonomous institutions in the country has to go. NAAC-affiliated institutions in the country should become autonomous in ten years, compared to over 50 percent now. Any accredited institution reaching the threshold of a certain academic standard should go for autonomy.
Institutions will have to set your curriculum and set questions, but you in that place can have a lot of freedom, lot of advantages. If autonomy is given the government funding will lessen and it will be similar to a private college and it seems to be the main issue at some government institutions. But this is uncalled for fear.
AICTE is moving towards this interface. There are also engaging teacher-training programmes and there had been encouraging response in past 5-6 years.”
A large number of start-ups have come to the picture and provided internships to 4-5 lakh students a year in the past few years. Many students from rural areas could not get the required platform. We are giving them that platform.
