Great Britain's 2012 Olympic team athletes emerge from top UK universities

A study revealed that athletes of the team Great Britain belong from the five major and popular universities of UK namely, the University of Nottingham, University of Bath, University of Cambridge, Loughborough University and the Open University. Beating the total rate of participants which is at 49%, 55% of the athletes are either pursuing a degree or are graduates from one of the famed universities.

81% of the hockey athletes are graduates or are still studying while 67% of the rowing and field athletics are also students, while it is discovered that swimmers and basketball players studied at overseas universities. Football has the least rate of students which is at 31%, while on the whole, 49 students of the 297 graduates and scholars, studied at universities abroad.

Popular athletes like Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, both double sculled gold medal winners, studied at the University of Edinburgh and University of Cambridge respectively, while Jessica Ennis, the heptathlon winner majored in psychology in the University of Sheffield. Judo runner up, Jemma gibbons is currently pursuing a post graduate degree in the University of Bath and many other stars like Lisa Dobriskey, distance runner, pursues her degree from University of Loughborough. Out of the total 535 athletes that represent the GB team, 98 hail from the university and 46 are current students.
