UK language tests diverting students to USA

Strict Language requirements set by the UK Borders scheme has forced more than 100 Brazilian students to head to USA for their higher studies. The students had planned to come to UK universities under the Brazil’s Science without Borders scheme. They failed in meeting the language requirements set by UKBA for applying for graduate studies in UK and instead had to go to US.

Brazil's Science without Borders scheme aimed to send 100,000 of Brazil's best undergraduates and postgraduates to study abroad. The scheme was started in December 2011 for students in engineering, math and science subjects. Around 130 Science without Borders scholars who were interested to Study in UK chose to apply in US rather than taking the language exams again, which would delay their studies. The US Department of State does not have a minimum language requirement level for students who want to obtain a US visa.

Organizers of Brazil's Science without Borders scheme had hoped that during the four years of the program, 10,000 students would head to UK for higher studies and the same numbers of students were expected to study in US. Till now, only 580 Brazilian students have been accepted to take up place in September compared to 2000 in US and 1000 in Canada.

As of April 2011, UK universities had to ensure that international students have achieved a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, failing which the student will not be enrolled in the University or obtain a UK visa.
