India encompasses a large number of public and private universities, out of which several universities are supported by the state and the central government. Apart from that several private universities are supported by various societies and bodies in India.

Universities in India are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.The University Grants Commission (UGC) was formally established only in November 1956 as a statutory body of the Government of India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India. The types of universities controlled by UGC are Central universities, State Universities, Deemed Universities and Private Universities.

Moreover, 16 Professional Councils are also established that control different aspects of accreditation and coordination of the universities.
