Calicut University India's top searched varsity: survey

The University of Calicut (UoC), Kerala is the top searched university of India, according to a survey conducted by Google on the most frequently searched varsities globally. Altogether five Indian universities feature among the top 20 in the Google list.

As per the Google list, UoC is at the 4th spot globally. Next in line are Anna University, Chennai at rank 6, followed by University of Mumbai at 11th rank, University of Rajasthan at 18th position and the Annamalai University with a global rank of 20.

The online search-based rating by Google has produced Results which differ from traditional rankings, which usually project the globally reputed institutes at the top. The United States (US) based University of Phoenix which offers several online courses has bagged the top spot in the list. The traditional favorite Oxford University has been ranked 13, Harvard University 15 and Cambridge University has acquired the 16th rank.

The Google ranking also highlights the fact that online courses are gaining in popularity more compared to conventional campus-based institutes. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is the pioneer of several online courses, has acquired the second position in the list.

The leading European varsity in the list is the Open University of the United Kingdom (UK) at rank 3. This university delivers a number of online courses on its FutureLearn platform and is the leader in distance learning programs of UK.

The Indian universities which feature in the Google list are also renowned for their online or distance learning programs.

The Google analysis states that the internet is now a major market for universities to reach probable students. It has become a very useful platform to deliver different courses, especially the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). In the year 2013, there was far greater number of searches for online varsities than traditional ones.

MOOCs have become a rage globally in the field of higher education with their interactive mode of learning and easy accessibility. MOOCs are part of the Indian government’s agenda too for educational development. Infact leading institutes across the country including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc Bangalore) have also joined the MOOC bandwagon.
