Should all colleges introduce entrance test for admissions to undergraduate courses?

With cut-offs as high as 100% in some Delhi University (DU) colleges such as Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in 2011, many students with lesser scores in Class XII leave all hopes to secure admission in a college and course of their choice. However unlike last year, the cut-offs at DU this year did not touch the 100% mark but still stood high for most popular colleges such as Hindu, Hans Raj, St. Stephens, Sri Venkateswara and many others. The admissions are still going on at DU through 7th cut-off list mostly for OBC category students. Thus to do away with this, Patna University (PU) is giving another chance to those students who could not score good marks in Class XII due to some or the other reasons. This year PU is introducing entrance test for admissions to undergraduate courses in its colleges setting a new trend.

This is a boon for the state students who despite of scoring lesser marks in their board exams can now secure admission to 3-year degree programs at reputed colleges such as Patna Science College.

A Bhagalpur boy, who had scored only 61% in Class XII, secured admission to Patna Science College after doing fairly well in the entrance test. If the admissions were conducted based on Class XII marks, he could have never got admission to science stream of any PU college.

Patna Science College opened admission for students to BSC Part-I honours program on July 17, 2012. Students who have qualified first cut-off list are getting admission to the honours course in their desired subject based on the vacancy of seats. About 185 students appeared in the first cut-off list released by the college. The admission would go on till July 21, 2012.

Magadh mahila College started admission to BSc honours course on July 16, 2012 and admissions for all the students appearing in the first list was completed by July 17, 2012. The second list was released on July 18, 2012.

Vanijya Mahavidyalaya also commenced admission for general students to BCom Par-I honours program on July 17, 2012. The general category admissions will be completed today, July 19, 2012.College will begin admissions for reserved category students from July 20, 2012. BN College will also start admission process from today July 19, 2012.

Patna College will start admission process for BA Part-I honours program from July 21, 2012 which will go till July 25, 2012. At Patna Women’s College, admission for undergraduate courses in arts and science streams are already going on.

All PU colleges will be completing admissions for the 3-year undergraduate courses by the end of July so that they can commence classes from August 1, 2012. The university is already conducting admission for its postgraduation courses in science, commerce and arts stream which may end by July 25, 2012.

Thus all universities and colleges across India should follow the footprints of PU to give another chance to students to make their career in their desired way and contribute in the upliftment of education standards in India. But do you think is this really possible in a country where HRD Ministry is proposing national level tests to reduce the multiplicity of exams?
