The campus placement session at the SRM University in Kattankulathur kicked off on a happy note this year, with three leading Information Technology (IT) firms offering jobs to a whopping 3,689 students on Day 1.
According to institute officials, IT majors Cognizant, Wipro and Infosys had together extended the record number of job offers to the 2014-2015 batch. Cognizant extended a total of 1,502 job offers, followed by 1,105 offers from Infosys and 1,082 from Wipro. The compensation packages offered were between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh. Altogether 1,500 students bagged multiple placement offers from the three IT firms.
Last year, SRM University had placed 2,900 students of the Bachelor of Technology (B Tech), Master of Technology (M Tech) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) streams. This year, SRM has already placed more than 3,500 students in the three top IT firms.
Apart from the 3,500 placed in the three IT firms, over 50 other companies have already hired 600 students, which include firms offering paid internship to around 200 students.
The top salary offer of an annual package of Rs 5 million Japanese Yen or around Rs 33 lakh was extended by the Japanese firm Works Applications. It was made to a final-year student of Computer Science Engineering (CSE).
The candidates who were most preferred by these IT firms were from the IT, CSE and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) branches, institute officials added.
As per officials of the IT firms, the quality of candidates has improved this year due to the hard work of the career development wing of the university.
Other key participants in the placements were Amazon, Hitachi Consulting, Musigma, Code Brahma, Unisys, S&P Capital IQ, Schneider Electric, Capgemini, I-Gate, CaterPillar and TCS.
Around 10% students of the batch opted out of the campus placements for higher studies. Moreover, 5% of the students started entrepreneurial ventures. SRM expects 190 more firms to visit the campus for recruitment this year.
SRM University, Chennai has campuses in Ramapuram, Kattangalathur and Vadapalini. It holds the entrance examination SRM Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMEEE) annually to grant admission into engineering courses with various specializations.
