The Bihar state government has rejected Patna University’s (PU) proposal to conduct entrance tests for admissions to three year degree programs offered in various colleges affiliated to the university.

The proposal was turned down by the higher education department, citing that conducting entrance tests for degree courses is against the Patna University Act. Officials from the department revealed that the proposal was rejected as the PU admission ordinance, under the PU Act does not have provisions to approve conducting entrance test for admission to UG courses. Also, the government has not taken any decision till now to conduct such entrance tests for admissions.

According to the Section 58(3) of the Patna University Act, 1976, in order for the university to conduct an entrance test for admissions to graduate courses, the state government must prescribe it and notify the university regarding the same. However, the state government has not done so until now. The university had decided to conduct the entrance test without taking prior permission of the state government.

Colleges affiliated to the university had made all necessary arrangements to hold the entrance tests from July 2 to July 7, 2012. About 20,000 students have applied for admission to courses including BSc, BCom and BA. The last date for submission of forms was June 25, 2012.

College Officials revealed that they have not received any notification regarding the postponement of the entrance test. However, they added that in case the exam is postponed, admission will be conducted based on the marks secured by the candidate in the last qualifying exam (plus two). Students who had applied for the entrance test will get a refund of the fee they had paid.
