West Bengal welcomes private universities, says chief minister

With the approval of a bill to establish 3 new universities which includes 1 private university in the state assembly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that now the education sector in the state is open to private universities.

She marked July 7, 2012 as a historic day as the legislative assembly approved the bills for establishing 3 new universities in West Bengal.

As per the bill, campus of Techno India University, a private university will be established at Salt Lake and Joka on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The 3 new universities will offer wide range of opportunities for the youth to enroll for the engineering, management and professional courses in the state instead of going to other states.

The state aided universities will come up at Cooch Behar district and Kazi Nazrul University at Asansol.

Another bill offering 17% reservation to Backward Classes and ST/SC was also passed which would help in uplifting and developing Muslim people.

The West Bengal Panchayat Election Bill 2012 was also passed which reserves 50% for women in elections.
