University of Alberta forge alliance with IIT Kharagpur for Joint Doctoral Degree Program
IIT Kharagpur – With aim of looking at the opportunities for a joint doctoral degree program, the University of Alberta, one of the leading varsities of Canada has forged alliance with Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. In fact, the two premier institutions had signed an agreement on January 14 at the IIT Kharagpur campus.
As per the memorandum of understanding signed between the University of Alberta and IIT Kharagpur, provision has been put in place for the students who work on collaborative projects jointly supervised by faculty members at both the institutions. Also, the special scheme from science and engineering research board (SERB) and UoA will be explored, where doctoral students at IIT Kharagpur might as well get the funding for up to twelve months in order to pursue joint research at UOA.
As per MoU PDF released by the IIT Kharagpur, UoA is a varsity continued pursuant to the terms of the Post Secondary Learning Act and desires to enter into a cooperative relationship with IIT Kharagpur to have an exchange of ideas and/or people between the two institutions. IIT Kharagpur, set up in 1951, is recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence in India.
Both the institutions will cooperate in the areas including any program offered at either institution as felt desirable and feasible on either side and that both sides contribute to the fostering development of the cooperative relationship between the two varsities. Both the institutions are seeking collaboration related to doctoral students and co-supervision. Both UoA and IIT Kharagpur are autonomous institutions, self-governing entities with the power to enter into agreements considered to be in their best interests and to further advance their ability to achieve the requirements of their mission and mandate.
The agreement establishes the framework by which the two institutions will work together in an effort to foster and develop a cooperative relationship in accordance with the Post Secondary Learning Act. The objective of the MoU is to establish a framework through which the two institutions to this agreement can foster and develop a relationship between the institutions through activities such as mobility of faculty and or staff, mobility of graduate and or undergraduate students, collaboration on graduate programming, including the co-supervision of graduate students, joint research activities and publications; participation in seminars and academic meetings, exchange of academic materials and other information and special short-term academic programs.
Each Institution will bear its own costs and expenses arising from the MoU unless otherwise mutually arranged and agreed to, the IIT Kharagpur statement added.
