University of Madras offers B.Com Course through Distance Education

The University of Madras, established in 1857, is one of the oldest and premier universities in India. The university offers a wide variety of courses with 18 colleges and 73 academic departments in them. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India have conferred the University with five-star status. It is recognized as a “University with potential for excellence” by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. It is one of the very few universities in India to have received this status. With two Nobel laureates and five former Presidents in its alumni, the University of Madras is one of the top educational institutions in the country.

The distance education courses in the University of Madras centers by the Institute of Distance Education (IDE). The institute was started in 1981 to help the students achieve their goals in education and research. For over 25 years, the institute has excelled in providing quality education to students who could not attend regular face to face courses. IDE offer 75+ courses in multiple disciplines.

 

Bachelor of Commerce

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) is an undergraduate course offered by the Institute of Distance Education. The duration of the course is three years and centers with five major courses – Commerce, Bank Management, Co-operation, Company Secretaryship, and Computer Applications. For the courses other than Computer Applications, the candidate must have completed 10+2 higher secondary course or a 3-year diploma in any discipline.

For the major in Computer Applications course, the candidate must have completed a 10+2 higher secondary course or a 3-year diploma in Computer Science Engineering / Electrical and Electronics Engineering / Electronics and Communications Engineering or Information Technology. Study materials will be sent to the students, and there will also be practical training classes conducted from time to time at the designated study centers.

The admission form and the prospectus of the course can be obtained at the University campus or any designated study centres of the University of Madras by paying the application fee of Rs.100. The admission will be on a merit basis based on the marks obtained in the higher secondary or diploma course.

 

Scholarships

For the students who belong to the SC / ST community studying through the distance education program will get full reimbursement of the fees. Additionally, they will also be provided with an annual scholarship of Rs.500 towards the purchase of books and other study materials. To avail the learning the student has to submit the SC / ST scholarship form along with the copy of relevant documents including the copy of the bank passbook.

Students with a physical disability can avail the state government scholarship for the differently abled students. They also have a complete waiver of the tuition and special fees in the university.
