About St.Xavier’s College
St. Xavier’s College is owned and managed by the Jesuits of the Calcutta province of the Society of Jesus. Under the Societies Registration Act 1961, with the registration of Catholic Mission of West Bengal which is also known as Calcutta Province of the Society of Jesus, the ownership of St. Xavier’s College was associated with this said Society from its registration in 1973, and it was administered by a Governing Body constituted as per statutes of Calcutta University.
With an inventive approach, the Founder Body initiated the registration of a new Society and name of St. Xavier’s College Kolkata Educational Trust in May 2005. With effect from 1st June 2006, the administration and management of St. Xavier’s College are now brought under this Trust and the day-to-day administration is vested with the Governing Body, as per guidelines of the UGC for Autonomous Colleges with minority character.
Role of BOS (Board of Studies)
Every subject or department has formed its own Board of Studies as per UGC guidelines. With the task of formulating or revising the syllabus and initiating innovative teaching-learning methodologies, each Board of Studies is entrusted. The Board of Studies meets at least once a semester.
After immense brainstorming and meeting with the higher officials, the authorities of St Xavier’s college have come up with a plan according to which a counselling cell for parents will be formed.
The college has also decided to open up its central research facility to researchers and faculty of other institutions by this academic year. All departments will organise at least one international seminar in an academic year in addition to national seminars and workshops to strengthen the tradition of research, the principal said.
In order to spread the Xavierian spirit, the college plans to set up a community radio in collaboration with the alumni association. Further, of the alumni association in South Africa this year in August which will be the 10th international chapter of the alumni association, it also plans to open a new chapter.
Body of the college
With the aid of a Catholic Minority Religious body, a Christian Minority Higher Educational Institution, St. Xavier’s was founded in 1860, the Society of Jesus, and was affiliated to Calcutta University in 1862. Admission is open to all irrespective of caste, creed and nationality while preference is shown to the educational and cultural needs of the Minority community.
Infrastructure and Medium of Instruction
Under five faculties, St. Xavier’s College offers UG and PG courses: Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration, and Education. Under Career Oriented Programmes and Computer Centre. Among a wide variety of courses, St. Xavier’s offers PhD in Physics, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Commerce; it also offers various professional certificate and diploma courses. For boys and girls both at the college’s rural campus at Raghavpur in South 24 Parganas, the college also plans to set up hostels. The medium of instruction is English. To improve their skill in spoken English, candidates coming from vernacular medium schools are offered facilities.
