GATE 2019 Syllabus for Biochemistry (XL-I)

GATE 2019 – In their graduate fields, to test the performance and understanding capability of students Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) which is a national level exam is being conducted. In this test is useful for the admissions. On behalf of the  National Coordination Board, GATE exam is jointly conducted by the seven IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science)  – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. In many of the government and private organizations, GATE score is important for recruitment. GATE score is compulsory for many private organizations.

About Biochemistry

The study of the chemistry of living things is called Biochemistry. Organic molecules and their chemical reactions are also included in the process. Biochemistry is used to learn about the biological processes which take place in cells and organisms. For a variety of purposes, Biochemistry is also used to study the properties of biological molecules. It is closely related to molecular biology. It mainly deals with the structures, functions, and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids, which gives the structure of cells and perform many of the functions associated with life.

 

Syllabus of Biochemistry

Part 1:

Amino acids, Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic acids; Protein structure, folding and function: Myoglobin, Hemoglobin, Lysozyme, Ribonuclease A, Carboxypeptidase and Chymotrypsin;  Importance of water; Structure and function of biomolecules; Organization of life;

 

Part 2:

Glycolysis, TCA cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, oxidative phosphorylation, gluconeogenesis, glycogen and fatty acid metabolism; Metabolism of Nitrogen-containing compounds: nitrogen fixation, amino acids and nucleotides. Photosynthesis: Calvin cycle; Metabolism and bioenergetics; Generation and utilization of ATP; Metabolic pathways and their regulation; Enzyme kinetics including its regulation and inhibition, Vitamins and Coenzymes

Part 3:

Characterization of biomolecules by electrophoresis, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry; ion exchange, size exclusion and affinity chromatography; Biochemical separation techniques;

Part 4:

Cell structure and organelles; Biological membranes; Signal transduction; Hormones and neurotransmitters; Transport across membranes;

Part 5:

Complement system; T, B and macrophages; T and B cell activation; Major histocompatibility complex; T cell receptor; Immunological techniques: Immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis, RIA and ELISA; Antibody structure, function and diversity; Cells of the immune system; Immune system: Active and passive immunity;

Part 6:

Biochemical regulation of gene expression; Recombinant DNA technology and applications: PCR, site-directed mutagenesis and DNA-microarray; DNA replication, transcription and translation;
