GATE 2019 Syllabus for Materials Science (XE-C)

GATE 2019 – In their graduate fields, to test the performance and understanding capability of students Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) which is a national level exam is being conducted. In this test is useful for the admissions. On behalf of the  National Coordination Board, GATE exam is jointly conducted by the seven IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science)  – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. In many of the government and private organizations, GATE score is important for recruitment. GATE score is compulsory for many private organizations.


About Materials Science

To their properties, the basis of materials science involves studying the structure of materials and relating them materials science is also an important part of forensic engineering and failure analysis that is investigating materials, products, structures or components which fail or which do not operate or function as intended, causing personal injury or damage to property. Material science is the most important subject in Mechanical engineering subjects. Materials science involves the discovery and design of new materials and also studying the synthesis, processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials. From metallurgy, which itself evolved from mining and ceramics, modern materials science evolved directly.

Processing of Materials

Chemical methods, preparation of nanoparticles and thin films; crystal growth techniques, zone refining; Powder synthesis, sintering,

Characterization Techniques

IR, Raman. Optical and Electron microscopy; X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic techniques like UV-vis,


Structure and Imperfections

Point groups, coordination and radius ratio concepts, point defects, Crystal symmetry dislocations, grain boundaries, surface energy and equilibrium shapes of crystals; space groups, indices of planes, close packing in solids, bonding in materials

Thermodynamics and Kinetics

Solidification and phase transformations, Fick’s laws of diffusion, mechanisms of diffusion, the temperature dependence of diffusivity, solid solutions, invariant reactions, lever rule, basic heat treatment of metals; Phase rule, phase diagrams;

Properties of Materials

Fermi energy, the density of states, elements of band theory, semiconductors, Hall effect, dielectric behaviour, piezo, Ferro, pyroelectric materials; Mechanical Properties: Stress-strain response of metallic, ceramic and polymer materials, yield strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, toughness, plastic deformation, fatigue, creep and fracture

Electronic Properties: Free electron theory, Magnetic Properties: Origin of magnetism in metallic and ceramic materials, paramagnetism, diamagnetism, Ferro and ferrimagnetism;

Thermal Properties

Specific heat, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion, thermoelectricity; Optical Properties: Refractive index, absorption and transmission of electromagnetic radiation in solids, electrooptic and magneto-optic materials, spontaneous and stimulated emission, gas and solid state lasers

Structure and properties, additives for polymer products, processing and applications, the effect of environment on materials, Concept of amorphous, single crystals and polycrystalline materials, crystallinity and its effect on physical properties, metal, ceramic, polymers, classification of polymers, polymerization, composites;

Corrosion, oxidation and prevention

Elements of Quantum Mechanics and Mathematics

Optical and thermal properties of materials, analytical solid geometry; Basics of quantum mechanics, differentiation and integration, differential equations, vectors and tensors, matrices, Fourier series, complex analysis, probability and statistics, quantum mechanical treatment of electrical;
