IGNOU introduce Peace and Conflict Course for prison inmates

In what could be termed as an innovative strategy, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) yesterday rolled out a Peace Studies and Conflict Management Certificate Course for the inmates of a jail in Delhi, on the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi. Designed in an association with the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti for jail inmates across the country to help them become better citizens once they go out and join the mainstream, said a TOI report.

Citing a statement issued by the varsity, the report further said that its Vice-Chancellor Nageshwar Rao announced the course to be free of cost for the inmates, who he stressed are not liabilities to the society and added that the program might as well help them to become assets. Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, who took part at the event, urged the program to be supplemented with some vocational training like chakra spinning to offer the inmates a sense of being self-sufficient and to instil in them the Gandhian philosophy of peace and non-violence, the report added.

Gandhi Smriti formerly known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, situated on Tees January Road, formerly Albuquerque Road, in New Delhi, India. It is the location where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on 30 January 1948.

Located at Rajghat (Delhi), Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti were formed in September 1984 by the merger of Gandhi Darshan at Rajghat and Gandhi Smriti.

The main attraction

Gandhi Smriti is one of the most prominent museums of Gandhi and has a library where around 60,000 books are kept and have bookshops selling books of Gandhi. There are approximately 6000 original photos of Gandhi preserved here. The house treasures many memories of the last 144 days of Gandhi’s life. The exhibition on the Mahatma, the room he lived in and the prayer ground where he fell a martyr with God’s name on his lips attract a large number of visitors daily.
