IIT KGP to launch scholarship programme for SAARC nationals

IIT KGP – A press release issued in Kolkata said that the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has decided to launch a scholarship programme for students for the SAARC countries.  It will be a full-time programme and will cover courses at all levels namely undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate and PhD or Doctoral level studies in SAARC countries which are outside India. The institute has in mind a plan to reach out to students from the SAARC countries that have yet to decide on the course of studies for the future.

The institute has plans of visiting embassies and universities of these SAARC countries and bring students in contact with the various courses offered and the benefits of opting for these courses. IIT Kharagpur will also take the help of the Ministry of External Affairs. There will be enrollments for the session beginning March 2019 and also for a summer and winter session later on.

The institute hopes to bring in students from Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka.

The inaugural batch will accommodate 10 students and there will be funding for the programme by the US-based Petrochemical industrialist Dr Ashoke Dey Sarkar who is also an alumnus of the Institute. All expenses of airfare, lodging and boarding expenses, tuition fee medical insurance as well as local transport will be borne by the philanthropist.

To quote Professor Baidurya Bhattacharya the Dean International Relations of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur “SAARC nations share a common heritage. We also share a common future and a common vision of prosperity. There are some excellent educational institutions in our neighbouring countries with students who are comparable to the best in the world…” The students will have to explore the courses offered and select their own mentors from among the many experts at IIT Kharagpur.

The candidates will have to appear in a video interview apart from the formal application. All areas of biosciences, engineering, and technology, social sciences, law, economics, and management will be included in the courses offered for studies.

Research projects including areas of artificial intelligence, climate change high speed and intelligent transportation clean energy, affordable healthcare, robotics can also be taken up by the students in collaboration with international partners of IIT Kharagpur.

The programme is a full-time course open for all SAARC country students who will be benefitted in more ways than one by offering for this course they will also be benefitted by the guidance offered by illustrious faculty of the world-famous IIT of Kharagpur a prestigious and premium institution.
