IIT Kharagpur and NTNU forge alliance for research and education

To facilitate cooperation in research and education, between the two institutes, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) on October 12, 2018. Quoting a statement from IIT KGP, a PTI report, the NTNU is an expert in hydropower, ocean modelling, deep-sea resources and marine technology which will be critical areas of focus under the agreement.

IIT KGP has three departments and centres working in these areas — the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, the Cente for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Science and the Department of Civil Engineering with its core areas in Hydrodynamics, Coastal, Marine and Hydraulic Engineering and Wave Modelling, IIT KGP Deputy Director Prof Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya said. Both IIT KGP and NTNU have trans-disciplinary academic and research programs encompassing science and technology, medicine, social sciences to arts and fine arts and more areas of common interest will be explored in future.

Prof Bhattacharyya and NTNU Rector Dr Gunnar Bovim signed the MoU in New Delhi on October 11. Nils Ragnar Kamsvg, Ambassador of Norway to India, was present on this occasion. Following the meeting of the Prime Ministers of India and Norway in April this year, the Norwegian Embassy has been seeking to engage with top educational institutions in India, the statement said. The NTNU is a university with an international focus, with headquarters in Trondheim and campuses in Ålesund and Gjøvik.  The NTNU has the main profile in science and technology, a variety of programmes of professional study, and exceptional academic breadth that also includes the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepreneurship, art disciplines and artistic activities.  The mandate of NTNU Alumni India is to link NTNU with business and society in India to enhance cooperation and contribute to NTNU’s vision “Knowledge for a better world”.
