Leicester College UK offers Footwear Foundation Degree (FdA)

Leicester College UK – This established two-year course addresses the need of today’s footwear industry. It is equivalent to years one and two of a BA (Hons) degree and combines academic research with vocational practice in a range of footwear disciplines.

They offer expertise in footwear technology required by the footwear industry worldwide: this course includes training supported by the UK footwear industry. This means you will work with specific requirements in mind, including with design, shoemaking, range building, supply chain management, quality control, footwear business studies, and production.

Course details

Year 1

There is a strong focus on work-based learning, and the course covers a broad spectrum of footwear industry-related topics. You will study the following modules: footwear fashion and design; production technology; footwear buying; supply and management skills; style prediction and marketing strategies; manufacturing technology; professional development; and product design and development. These are assessed through practical and written assignments. The course offers an opportunity to take part in competitions and live briefs.

Year 2

In year two a greater sense of independent study is required with further development of your specialist skills, culminating in a final collection and end of year show. To ensure currency with the industry, you will be required to complete an independently-sourced work placement.


Standard entry to this course requires a minimum of 32 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject (i.e. two A2s at grade D, extended diploma PPP, or an Access to HE). You are expected to hold GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or equivalent. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate the ability to study this subject at the university level and who can evidence relevant experience. You will need a portfolio of your work. Following receipt of this work, an interview by phone will be conducted. Assessment is continuous throughout both years for each module. You must achieve 120 credits in year one to progress onto year two.

Additional Costs

If you have to complete a work placement involving working with children or vulnerable adults, you may need to apply for a DBS check ad if you are 19 or over on the September 1, on the year of entry, this will incur a cost to you of £44.

Course and Career Progression

You can top up to a full degree by joining the final year of the BA (Hons) Professional Studies (Creative Industries) at Leicester College or the BA (Hons) Footwear at DMU. It may also be possible for you to apply to other universities to top up to other footwear-related degree programmes. This course allows you to progress to product development and design, footwear manufacturing and retail, quality control or footwear technology.
