MBA in Fisheries Management
Fisheries Management- Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) is offering some new courses in Fisheries Management from this year, of which the MBA program in Fisheries Management is one.
TNFU was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2012. Its headquarters is located in Nagapattinam and has three institutes functioning under it:
- Fisheries College and Research Institute or FC&RI in Thoothukudi
- Fisheries College and Research Institute or FC&RI in Ponneri
- College of Fisheries Engineering or CoFE in Nagapattinam
TNFU offers several undergraduates, graduate, and postgraduate programs in Fisheries Sciences.
The TNFU Business School
From the academic year 2017-18, TNFU has started the TNFU Business School, under the Faculty of Management Studies. It is a flagship project for the university, in the TNFU OMR Campus in Chennai. The school will impart different types of Business Education programs to develop business management and entrepreneurship skills in the area of Fisheries and Aquaculture Business Enterprises.
The MBA Program
TNFU offers a full-time two-year management program in Fisheries Enterprise Management known as MBA – FEM. The program is self-financed. It will teach students all business functions in detail, and how to apply the principles, concepts, theories, procedures, plans, techniques, tools, standards, and regulations, best practices, and so on in the various businesses of fisheries, aquaculture and allied industries at an enterprise level.
The Advantage of the MBA-FEM Program
The MBA program has a real-time approach for executives and managers of the future who will serve organisations and industries dealing with commercial and non-commercial activities of Fisheries and Aquaculture. It will give participants an edge in managing the Fisheries business, by optimally using organisational resources, utilising the approach and entrepreneurial skills learned during the program.
Need for Business Managers
The Fisheries industry in India is fast changing from unorganised to organised or at least partially organised and generates more than 7.2 billion USD of gross business value. Knowledge management is crucial at this stage from both the technical aspect as well as the managerial or business aspect. Therefore, there is a genuine need for a formal education program to support the industry by developing trained Business Managers, Entrepreneurs, and Business Leaders.
The course will be of two years duration with a total of 80 credits. 64 credits will be classroom based, and 16 credits will be project or seminar based. The course is 64% theory and 34% practical based. The course break up is as follows:
- 22 core management courses
- Four fisheries business management courses
- 4 out of 6 optional courses
- One industrial project
- Two seminars
- 18 top-up courses for advanced learning
Graduates in Fisheries Engineering or any other allied discipline from TFNU or any other agricultural university and graduates or postgraduates in other disciplines can apply for this course.
