Mizoram to witness medical college

A group called the missionaries of the state took it upon themselves to build new schools in Mizoram before the year 1987, and look after the primary education in the state. The department of education in Mizoram is very organized and falls under the Education Directorate of Mizoram and a council minister in the Ministry of Education of the state. The education sector improved by leaps and bounds, taking the literacy figure to 91.58% as per the census reports of the year 2011 after 1987 when the reins of education came in the hands of the cabinet minister of Mizoram. Now, Mizoram is all set to open its first medical college.

Medical College

The rising number of medical aspirants in the state has been initiated by the Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla while establishing the institution. Mizoram’s first medical college is slated to open its doors in August. As required by the Medical Council of India (MCI), L. Fimate, the Director of the college, the Mizoram Institute of Medical College of Research which is located at Falkwawn has all the necessary infrastructures.

The MCI has recommended the Letter of Permission for setting up the college. Every year in the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, (RIMS), Mizoram has been getting just 10 seats. It is a central college. Unfortunately, in other medical colleges in India, the medical aspirants of Mizoram find it almost impossible to get a seat. The college will initially capacitate 100 students, 85 seats reserved for Mizo students.

Education in Mizoram

The official language of the state is Mizo and it is used as the medium of instruction in many schools and colleges of Mizoram. However, it should also be noted that English is encouraged and is gradually being made the medium of instruction across the education institutes of the state. The Education Directorate in the state of Mizoram comprises one education director, one joint education director and three deputy education directors.

Mizoram follows the 10+2 system of school education. There are several schools in Mizoram which have acquired a national status. School education in Mizoram was introduced by the British. Towards the spread of education in Mizoram, the Christian missionaries have worked for the uplift of the Indian society. The first school in Mizoram was set up in the capital city Aizwal in the year 1897.

Higher Education

More and more citizens were encouraged to enrol in these institutions to earn degrees after 1947 during which the colleges began to be established in cities across Mizoram. Today, Mizoram is home to colleges that offer study programs on a variety of subjects. The government authorities in the state paid greater attention to the spread of education in Mizoram after the independence of India from British rule.
