NCERT Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling

The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), the autonomous organisation under the Government of India, has commenced the application process for admission to the Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling, as per the announcement made on the official website. The burgeoning complexities and stresses of modern day living, daily reports of lack of interest in studies, low achievement, truancy, aggression, behavioural problems, suicide, drug abuse and the like call for the provision of guidance and counselling for children and youth in schools.

Teachers and other school personnel need to equip themselves with helping skills to promote students’ personal, social, educational, career development and adjustment throughout the school years. This, however, requires professional orientation and training.

In this context, the NCERT offers a Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling. The diploma course is meant for training of professionals in guidance and counselling, combining distance and face to face modes. The course aims at enhancing the skills and competencies of teachers to promote the holistic development of students and handle their academic, socio-emotional and ethical problems.

The course is open to teachers, teacher educators, school administrators and untrained guidance personnel from India. What is more, the session will be transacted in three phases: distance (six months starting from January to June 2019), face to face contact program at respective study centres (three months starting from July to September 2019) and internship in hometown (three months commencing from October till December next year).


Admission to the eligible candidates will be offered at DEPFE, NCERT, New Delhi and Regional Institutes of Education at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore and Shillong. The maximum number of seats at each centre will be 50. Government deputed candidates will be given preference. The advance copy will be considered for screening of applications. Candidates who are not working currently but are graduates with a teaching degree and have at least two years of teaching or related experience. Candidates who are postgraduates in psychology /education /social work/child development/special education are also eligible. Preference will be given to those with at least one year of teaching or related experience. Minimum percentage of marks required is 50%. There is 5% relaxation on minimum percentage required for SC/ST candidates.

The application form is available for download on the NCERT website and can also be obtained from any of the RIEs. Applications complete in all respects should be sent electronically (through e-mail) as well as by post to one of the study centres based on the regional basis (the list can be found in the official brochure).

Selection Process

Candidates would be shortlisted after receiving applications and will be called at the study centre study centre in their regions for selection test which includes essay writing and interview.
