Trending Course – Genetic Engineering

Genetic Engineering means engineering of genetic traits, in other words making changes in the genetics of an organism.  To quote Wikipedia” Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct manipulation of an organism’s genome using biotechnology. It is a set of technologies used to change the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes within and across species boundaries to produce improved or novel organisms”

Genetic engineering is of great use to improve on the existing breed, it is used in medicine mass production of insulin, human growth hormones, Follistim human albumin antibodies, antihemophilic factors, vaccines, many other drugs etc.  In research, genetic engineering is used to find out the functions of certain genes.

Genetic Engineering also called genetic modification manipulates the genomes of an organism making it a better version of its existing self. New DNA may either be added to or removed from a particular organism in order to improve its quality. It makes use of the methods of biotechnology to transfer within and even outside of the organism, certain desired and undesired traits so as to improve the species. This is called GMO or genetically modified organism. It has become very common in agriculture too eg: we get to see many varieties of genetically modified fruits and vegetables.

Thus we find that Genetic Engineering is being used in many fields like medicine, agriculture, industrial biotechnology.

All this literature gives us an idea of the job market in this field and we safely conclude that it has many openings. So we can decide on taking it up as a career prospect. For this, we will be required to take a graduate or post graduate degree in microbiology and biotechnology.
