Why is IELTS a criterion
IELTS ((International English Language Testing System) is the most popular test for judging a student’s expertise in the English language. It is used to judge a student’s aptitude and control and skill over the English language, especially those people who want to go to countries where English is the official language. It is standardised test accepted internationally as a proficiency test of the English language. It is organised jointly by the British council, IDP IELTS Australia and Cambridge .It was established in 1989 it belongs to same category of tests as TOEFL, TOEIC, PTE, and OPI/OPIC
IELTS is the only English language test recognised by UKVI for visa customers it is also recognised by Australian and New Zealand authorities and by Canada too. IELTS is a criterion because when you go to a foreign land to study you should know the language of that place to be able to understand the culture of the land you are staying in and also in relation to the course you are pursuing.
The reason why IELTS is the most popular test is that no minimum score is required to pass the test everyone who appears for the test is issued a Test Report form you are placed according to the score 1to 9 (band 1 means non user of the language and band 9 means expert user) and different institutions have different judging scales granting results accordingly. There is also a band 0 for people who have applied for visa or admission but have not taken their IELTS .The results are valid for a period of two years after which the candidate has to prove that he has worked at maintaining the level.
IELTS has 2 versions the (a) Academic and the (b) General. The Academic version is for students who want to study at the tertiary level in an English speaking country and the general is for those who want to go there for work permits and training.
The IELTS tests the ability to read write and speak in English, it is conducted as one to one interview thus making judging and assessment easy. Special care is taken to judge according to various accents which differ from country to country.
IELTS plays a significant role in ensuring that life is made easy for the candidate in a particular foreign country to understand the rules and regulations, customs and traditions. It also makes it easy for the authorities to deal with the candidate when it comes to a law and order situation or when he has to be explained rules of general importance. Thus, it creates no difficulty for either party.
