Anna University, Chennai – Taramani Campus

Anna University, Chennai – Taramani Campus was established in 2007 by the splitting of Anna University into six universities, namely Anna University, Chennai, Anna University, Chennai – Taramani Campus, Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, Coimbatore, Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, Tirunelveli and Anna University Chennai – Regional Office, Madurai.

Anna University is a technical university, was named after C N Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1978.  The Anna University, which is of the affiliated type, is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering education (UICEE). UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.

The Centre for Biotechnology was established in Anna University with financial support from Department of Biotechnology, Delhi, University Grants Commission, Delhi. The Centre has a well defined building at Taramani campus with facilities for carrying out research in various areas of Biotechnology, housing modern infrastructure to conduct work in Bioprocess Technology, Immunology, Drug Discovery, Chemical Biology, Computational Biology and Stem Cell Biology.

Campus at Anna University, Taramani 

The Anna University, Chennai has three campuses, the College of Engineering, Alagappa College of Technology and School of Architecture which are located in Guindy and the Madras Institutte of Technology at Chrompet, and a new campus at Taramani.

A new campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future.

B.Tech Industrial Biotechnology stands for Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Biotechnology. It is a 4 year course. The minimum eligibility is Intermediate (10+2)in Science. Industrial biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes, including manufacturing, alternative energy (or “bioenergy”  , and biomaterials. The course covers subjects like Genetic Engineering, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Mass Transfer and Separation, Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering etc.
