Annamalai University was founded in the year 1920. The institution is located at Annamalai nagar, Tamil Nadu, India. The founder of the prestigious institution is Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar. He was a founder of multiple colleges. With a pure desire to offer education to the downtrodden and to stimulate Tamil Literature, he founded Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College in a rural setup at Chidambaram.
In the year 1928, the local government approached Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar to handover all the institutions in order to set up a University. Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar agreed with the local government and that led to the establishment of Annamalai University on 01.01.1929 as per Annamalai University Act 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act 1 of 1929).
The most significant development is the enactment of the Annamalai University Act, 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013), which has come into force from September 25, 2013, after obtaining the assent of His Excellency, the President of India.
In the year 2014, Annamalai University was accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. It is one of the India’s prestigious and largest public residential universities with over 49 departments of study. The institution is quiet popular for the distance education it offers.
“The NIRF-2018” by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has ranked the University in the band 101 – 150 in the overall category as well as the University Category. In the Pharmacy Category the ranking is 20th in India. In the Medical Category the ranking is 24th.
