Institute of Distance and Open Learning , University of Mumbai (IDOL), Mumbai was established in 1971, primarily for the benefit of students who would have otherwise been deprived of the access to higher education. It is recognized by UGC and accredited by NAAC. The main objective of the institute is to provide facilities of higher education to the working population, women and adults, who wish to upgrade their education or acquire knowledge in various disciplines.

The aim of the institute is to provide education for poor and such other people who cannot attend regular face to face class room teaching and to help students to upgrade educational qualification, for academic achievements in the process of lifelong education. They strive to develop education as a lifelong activity so that the individual can refresh knowledge or can acquire knowledge in new areas.
