Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU), Varanasi was established in 1960 as College of Medical Sciences. Initially, IMS BHU had only 9 Departments of Modern Medicine. In 1971, the college was upgraded as Institute of Medical Sciences. Currently the Institute has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialties and 8 Departments of Ayurveda.
Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU is perhaps the only institute in India which offers courses quality education both in the Modern Medicine and Ayurveda. Further growth of postgraduate education continued with approval of DM and MCh courses in 10 Super specialties in 1976. In 1978, the existing Faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth.
Campus of Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University –
The institute is located within the University premises, which gives opportunity for research interactions with well equipped center of excellence in the University. The campus of IMS lies at the front part of university. The campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a post office, a famous temple (BHU Vishwanathji), playgrounds and sporting fields.
