The Russian government bestowed the National Research University status to MIPT in November 2009. If u go back in time MIPT would be the best university because it has a very rich history .It was founded by Pyotr Kapitsas, Nikolay Semenov and Sergey Khristianovich. Its first rector was Ivan Petrov and first professors were Kapitsa, Semenov and Lev Landau who were all Nobel Prize winners. Its faculty comprises of over 80 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

They have a unique system of education called as the Phystech system which aims at combining fundamental science, engineering disciplines and student research. It celebrates two anniversaries every 5 years marking its birth as the Department of Physics and Technology at the Moscow State University on November 25th 1946 and establishment of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology five years later.

It has partnered with various institutions worldwide some of which are Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, Baku State University, Georgia Institute of Technology and so on. Major research fields of MIPT include  aerospace physics and technology, physics for life sciences, applied mathematics and computing sciences, telecommunications and microprocessor technology, fundamental interactions and structure of matter quantum and electronics technology .They have made notable discoveries one of which is the ‘carrot ‘pigment which prolongs lifespan of nematodes and drosophila flies.

MIPT is often ranked number 3 in the national rankings. Their mission is based on the four principles given by the founders aimed  at training students in science and technology  thereby enabling them to make valuable contributions in the fields of science and technology for the betterment of mankind namely selecting best prospective students, leading scientists participating in teaching individual approach to students to develop their creative talents ,creating an atmosphere of technological research and constructive creativity ,using the potential of the best laboratories in the country.
