Dr Triveni Goswami Mathur - Director

Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru, a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) offers a two-year full-time MBA program in Communication Management, with specialisations in Advertising, Public Relations and Media Management. This is a niche program and attracts a diverse group of students united with a passion, interest and aptitude to pursue media studies.

In the first year, students understand the various components of media, culture and society including economics, business statistics, marketing management, research, digital marketing, integrated marketing communications besides an introduction to subjects that lead to the specialisations the following year. In the second year, students learn deeper aspects of strategic management in advertising, Public Relations and Media Management, evaluation of communication strategies and models, corporate communication, campaign planning, media investment management, digital communication solutions, brand valuation, business model for digital future, media laws and ethics etc. Besides, Social Responsibility project is a mandatory course integrated into the first year curriculum that helps our students be aware of the importance of being socially sensitive.

We have a strong faculty with Ph.Ds and intense academic and research abilities. Research is given much importance throughout the course. As part of the curriculum students have to work on their dissertations in partial fulfilment of their MBA program, during which they are guided by our faculty through the process of research. Besides faculty presenting at, publishing and attending research conferences, we encourage our students to work on research projects and papers. It is worth mentioning here that our students, under faculty mentorship and collaboration, have presented their research papers in International and National research conferences. Our rich library resources and a dedicated Media Lab helps students in the process of learning and research.

The contribution of industry experts as visiting and guest faculty add immense value to the rigour of academics at SSMC. Almost every subject has at least one industry expert aligned to every course, and they share their experience and learning with the students. Their interactions help ‘join the dots’ between theory and practice. One of our interesting aspects is that we invite our Alumni through our “TouchBase Series – an Alumni Connect Initiative”, to share their work-life learnings with current students. What happens here, is there is a lot of empathy and mentorship that happens. Besides, our students undertake industry projects at regular intervals for real-time experience.

We support our students for placements at the end of the program. The Corporate Relations Cell under the institute’s Corporate Relations Executive conducts this exercise. The process of preparing students for placements, in fact, begins soon after they join the course. In addition to real-time projects, the insights by industry experts through the two years that help them understand the nuances of media functioning, through our library service, students get on a daily basis, media insights that are sent to their inbox for them to read and understand the goings-on. At the end of the first year, students have to undergo a mandatory industry internship. In the second-year, we conduct mock-interviews on-campus by media experts as panelists, to groom our students for the final placement process. This culminates in the final placement process attracting leading media houses and corporates to recruit our students. Some students also opt for entrepreneurial ventures.
