New Open Online Learning Program called KOOL launched in Kerala

Quoting the news agency, PTI, an IE report said that The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) had launched KOOL, its Online Open Learning training platform. The platform can be used to train teachers, students and the general public. To start with, teachers would be prepared and The Government of Kerala has rolled out a new online learning program, KOOL, While unveiling the endeavour, Prof C Raveendranath, Education Minister of Kerala said that KOOL is a significant step by the government of Kerala to emerge India’s first computer digital state in Education.

The first batch will commence next month. Registration for the training began November 18. With the state’s schools going Hi-Tech, requiring teachers and students to be trained on different domains simultaneously, it was decided to launch KOOL, a press release said. KOOL has been designed in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) model, which is becoming popular worldwide.

KOOL is a major step by the State of Kerala to become India’s first complete digital state in Education”, said Prof C Raveendranath, state Education minister. Learning Management Systems were a part of the approach paper on ‘Samagra’ resource portal, and KOOL has been developed as an expansion of ‘Samagra’, the resource portal of the education department noted the report.

KOOL has a slew of features for learners in the form of animated learning assistants, video tutorials and checklists for practising the activities, citing a press release, the report said. “We have 200 mentors with a capacity to train 4,000 persons at a time”, K Anvar Sadath, Vice Chairman and Executive Director; KITE was quoted as saying by the report and added, “It is compulsory for teachers to complete 45 hours of computer course to clear their probation.”


KITE (Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education) is a Govt of Kerala establishment set up to foster, promote and implement modernisation of educational institutions in the State of Kerala, owned by the State or run under the aid of Government. KITE is registered as a Section 8 Company, by transforming the erstwhile IT@School Project, which revolutionised the education system of the State. An Infrastructure division has also been set-up under KITE for upgrading the infrastructural facilities in schools. The spectrum of KITE includes Information & Communication Technology, Capacity Building, Content Development, Connectivity, e-Learning, Satellite-based education, Support and Maintenance mechanism, e-Governance or other related activities.

KITE aims to upgrade the Government sector educational institutions at par with international standards regarding infrastructure, facilities, resources, curriculum, pedagogy, etc. It also seeks to formulate and implement projects for the use of ICT as a tool for the improvement of the education quality in the State of Kerala.

Further KITE acts as an Advisor or Consultant to the Government and private sector in improving education quality through ICT. KITE has already started the implementation of Hi-Tech school programme of the Education Department, by which 45000 classrooms in 4775 schools are being made Hi-Tech, for which KIIFB has already approved funding of Rs.493.50 crore.

As part of Public Education Rejuvenation Mission, all classrooms in secondary and higher secondary sections in the State of Kerala has been converted as Hi-Tech classrooms, and IT/ICT enabled education has become a reality. But deputing teachers for different training programmes in working days adversely affects the academic days and academic activities of students. Nowadays Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) is top-rated and is much useful. In line with this – KITE has developed a unique tool for online courses/training;– KITE’s OPEN ONLINE LEARNING – KOOL., a general online tool to impart training/ courses to teachers, students, parents and public. In this tool, there is a provision for registration, submission of an assignment, communication to Course Mentor.
