No scope for separate quota for students of Pondicherry University

Gurmeet Singh, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University today opined that there was no room for a separate quota for students of the Union Territory of Pondicherry to gain admission into various disciplines available in the University, according to a PTI report. The University is a centrally-sponsored higher education institution, set up through an Act of Parliament. According to Singh, only statutory reservations were available for students in keeping with the guarantees contained in the Constitution and other statutes. On demands from various quarters and a resolution adopted by the provincial Assembly seeking individual quota for the students of the UT in multiple courses in the varsity, Singh said, “India is one country, and the statutorily approved quotas of reservation would alone be available. Therefore, there is no scope for any reservation for the local students. But in the absence of such a quota for local students, a number of them from the UT had joined the university.”

“Sri Aurobindo Chair, M Karunanidhi Chair and a Tamil School for Literature and Performing Arts will be commenced soon in the varsity. The Tamil school will take up with work of translating classical Tamil literature into Hindi”, the Vice-Chancellor informed the media. The Pondicherry (Puducherry) Government had proposed to establish a chair in the name of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, late M Karunanidhi. “The proposal will be taken up with the Union HRD Ministry for statutory approval. The students of the varsity will take up door-to-door survey to assess the health status of the villagers coming under the jurisdiction of the affiliated colleges. Solid waste management and the education status of the children in the villages will also be looked. A village headman has been fixed in each of the 125 villages to be covered under the survey”, Singh added.
